According to the China Passenger Car Association, March 2025 witnessed wholesale sales of approximately 420,000 units of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs, including extended-range electric vehicles, EREVs) in China. Narrow-sense PHEVs (excluding EREVs) accounted for 334,000 units, marking a 38.9% year-on-year increase and a 17.5% month-on-month growth. EREVs reached 86,000 units, up 26.0% year-on-year and 27.3% month-on-month. PHEVs comprised 37.2% of total new energy passenger car wholesale sales in China.
BYD: Leading the PHEV Market, FANGCHENGBAO BAO5 Surges 70%
In March's top 20 PHEV (including EREV) wholesale sales, BYD Group secured 12 positions:
Geely and Chery: Yinhe and TanSuo06 Challenge BYD
In the narrow-sense PHEV market, BYD, the defending champion, faces competition from traditional Chinese brands Geely and Chery. Geely's Yinhe Xingjian 7 and Yinhe L6 sold 11,890 and 8,027 units, respectively, taking the second and third spots after BYD.
Chery Group, building on its existing PHEV models, has introduced significant new models like Fengyun T8, Fengyun T9, Fengyun T10, TanSuo06C-DM, and Cowin Kunlun iHD since last year. Among them, the TanSuo06C-DM, launched at last year's Beijing Auto Show, sold 7,540 units in March 2025.
Under pressure from models like Chery's TanSuo06C-DM and Geely's Yinhe L7, BYD's Song Pro DM-I sales in March increased by only 4.2% year-on-year.
Li Auto: Contending with Changan and AITO EREVs
As the leader in the EREV market, Li Auto topped China's EREV sales with its L6 and L7 models but faced challenges from groups like Changan, Thalys, and Chery. Li Auto sold 17,197 units of the L6, while L7 sales dropped to 8,707 units, a 19.1% year-on-year decrease.
Changan Group's AVITA 07 and Changan Deep Blue S07 EREV models sold 6,589 and 6,228 units in March, respectively, becoming the second-largest player in the EREV market after Li Auto.
Thalys's AITO M7 sales surged last year, accumulating 193,599 units, surpassing any Li Auto model. In March 2025, AITO M7 sales declined 68% year-on-year to 5,957 units, highlighting the market's fierce competition. The AITO M9 EREV model achieved a 37.4% year-on-year increase, reaching 4,965 units.
Chery Group has also entered the EREV market with EREV versions of the Star Era ES, Star Era ET, and Wisdom Realm R7, launched last year. In March, sales of the Wisdom Realm R7 EREV reached 3,028 units.
In addition to the above models, many automakers are accelerating the launch of significant PHEV/EREV models. Companies like XPeng Motors and GAC Aion, which currently do not have PHEV/EREV models on the market, also plan to introduce them. Competition in this market is expected to intensify further in the future.
