On March 14, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced that Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automobile Co., Ltd., Jaguar Land Rover (China) Investment Co., Ltd., and Jaguar Land Rover (Ningbo) Trading Co., Ltd. (collectively referred to as "Jaguar Land Rover") have submitted recall plans, initiating a recall of over 740,000 vehicles.
This article lists the models and production dates of the recalled vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover owners can check if their vehicles are affected based on their car models.
According to the announcement, Jaguar Land Rover's current recall is "initiated following a defect investigation by the State Administration for Market Regulation," indicating that it is a "passive recall."
Industry experts note a significant difference between active and passive recalls. Active recalls demonstrate a company's integrity and sense of responsibility, reflecting its commitment to its products and consumers. Conversely, passive recalls suggest an evasion of social responsibility.
The announcement states that starting from August 15, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover will recall a total of 333,800 vehicles.
Specifically, Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automobile Co., Ltd. (recall number S2025M0036I) will recall 52,899 locally produced Range Rover Evoque vehicles manufactured between September 16, 2014, and September 22, 2017; 75,956 locally produced Land Rover Discovery Sport vehicles from January 28, 2015, to September 22, 2017; and 17,626 locally produced Jaguar XFL vehicles from June 7, 2016, to August 8, 2017.
Jaguar Land Rover (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (recall number S2025M0037I) will recall 11,814 imported Land Rover Discovery Sport vehicles from July 7, 2014, to March 17, 2016; 87,924 imported Range Rover Evoque vehicles from February 4, 2011, to July 26, 2017; 39,900 imported Land Rover Freelander 2 vehicles from December 1, 2011, to October 3, 2014; 396 imported Range Rover Sport vehicles from November 28, 2013, to February 3, 2016; 25,420 imported Jaguar XF vehicles from September 20, 2012, to June 11, 2015; 13,573 imported Jaguar XJ vehicles from February 22, 2012, to September 6, 2017; and 8,253 imported Jaguar XE vehicles from October 15, 2014, to February 10, 2017.
Jaguar Land Rover explains that in the affected vehicles, high oil pulse pressure within the phaser of the engine intake variable camshaft timing (VCT) system may cause fatigue failure of the limiter, leading to displacement or detachment. In extreme cases, this can damage the engine timing system, resulting in loss of power during driving, posing a safety hazard.
Notably, Jaguar Land Rover emphasizes in the announcement that this recall follows a defect investigation by the State Administration for Market Regulation.
Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automobile Co., Ltd. and Jaguar Land Rover (China) Investment Co., Ltd. will authorize Jaguar Land Rover dealers to replace the improved limiter free of charge for vehicles within the recall scope to eliminate safety hazards. Vehicles that have already replaced optimized parts do not require additional repairs.
Jaguar Land Rover advises that until the recall repair is completed, users should monitor their vehicle's operating conditions. If the engine malfunction indicator light (MIL) illuminates or the engine makes abnormal noises, please contact an authorized Jaguar Land Rover dealer promptly.
The announcement also states that starting from August 15, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover will recall an additional 298,700 vehicles.
Specifically, Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automobile Co., Ltd. (recall number S2025M0038I) will recall 41,072 locally produced Jaguar XFL vehicles from June 12, 2018, to January 10, 2024; 29 locally produced Jaguar E-PACE vehicles from October 24, 2020, to August 11, 2022; 54,808 locally produced Jaguar XEL vehicles from March 29, 2018, to September 14, 2023; 24,606 locally produced Land Rover Discovery Sport vehicles from June 26, 2018, to December 5, 2019; 67,443 locally produced Land Rover Discovery vehicles from October 28, 2019, to June 20, 2023; and 61,564 locally produced Range Rover Evoque vehicles from April 18, 2019, to February 25, 2024.
Jaguar Land Rover (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (recall number S2025M0039I) will recall 4,289 imported Land Rover Discovery vehicles from July 3, 2018, to June 19, 2023; 3 imported Range Rover vehicles from September 13, 2018, to September 26, 2018; 133 imported Range Rover Evoque vehicles from July 23, 2018, to November 6, 2018; 1,526 imported Range Rover Sport vehicles from July 16, 2018, to June 28, 2021; 23,383 imported Range Rover Velar vehicles from May 24, 2018, to February 22, 2023; 16,731 imported Jaguar F-PACE vehicles from June 4, 2018, to January 26, 2023; 1,322 imported Jaguar F-TYPE vehicles from January 23, 2018, to November 23, 2022; 143 imported Jaguar XE vehicles from July 26, 2018, to November 27, 2018; and 89 imported Jaguar XF vehicles from June 15, 2018, to November 15, 2018.
Jaguar Land Rover (Ningbo) Trading Co., Ltd. (recall number S2025M0040I) will recall 1,550 imported Land Rover Defender vehicles from April 30, 2021, to June 21, 2023.
Jaguar Land Rover explains that for the vehicles included in this recall, due to software logic issues in the engine control module, under certain conditions during vehicle startup, the engine control module may output an incorrect signal frequency, causing abnormal operation of the fuel pump. In extreme cases, this may lead to the vehicle being unable to start or losing power while driving, posing a safety hazard.
As mentioned, Jaguar Land Rover's current recall is "initiated following a defect investigation by the State Administration for Market Regulation," indicating a "passive recall."
Industry experts emphasize the distinction between active and passive recalls. Active recalls reflect a company's integrity and responsibility, demonstrating its commitment to its products and consumers. Conversely, passive recalls suggest an evasion of social responsibility.
Five Star Car Review found that on January 24, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced that Jaguar Land Rover had recalled a total of 108,800 vehicles.
This time, Jaguar Land Rover recalled a total of 94,553 locally produced 2020-2022 facelift Land Rover Discovery Sport and 2020-2022 Range Rover Evoque vehicles from April 18, 2019, to September 20, 2022; and 14,235 locally produced 2023 Jaguar XEL, XFL, and 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque vehicles from January 9, 2023, to May 17, 2023.
The announcement also states that this recall follows a defect investigation by the State Administration for Market Regulation.
When it comes to active recalls, Jaguar Land Rover appears somewhat "stingy."
For example, on February 28, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced that Jaguar Land Rover would recall a total of 54 imported 2020-2025 Land Rover Defender vehicles from March 2, 2020, to July 2, 2024, effective immediately.
The announcement explains that for the vehicles included in this recall, the raised body air intake installed in the aftermarket may not be properly installed due to part size tolerance issues, causing it to fall off during use, affecting other road users, and posing a safety hazard.
Upon closer examination of the two passive recalls, the earliest "refurbished" vehicles by Jaguar Land Rover were produced in 2011, and the latest in 2024, spanning a period of 13 years. During this extended period, couldn't the company have identified the existing issues?
The answer is no. As stated in the announcement, Jaguar Land Rover noted that "as some vehicles have previously replaced optimized parts, these vehicles do not require additional repairs."
The aforementioned industry experts suggest that Jaguar Land Rover prefers to address issues through "private" repairs, which is a form of "covering up" and disregards the interests of most car owners.
According to incomplete statistics by Five Star Car Review, from 2011 to 2024, Jaguar Land Rover sold a total of 1.38 million vehicles in the Chinese market, and the company has recalled over 740,000 vehicles in the past two months.
This means that approximately 54% of the vehicles produced by Jaguar Land Rover over the past 13 years have been recalled. Notably, this does not include the company's previous recall data.
Jaguar Land Rover's latest financial report reveals cumulative losses of 10.2 billion yuan over the fiscal years from 2022 to 2024, with sales declining by over 60% from their peak.
According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, sales of Land Rover in the Chinese market fell from a peak of 187,000 vehicles in 2017 to less than 60,000 vehicles in 2024.
From the available data, in the first two months of 2025, Jaguar sold only 848 vehicles, and Land Rover sold only 2,032 vehicles, totaling 2,880 vehicles, a decrease of approximately 58% compared to the 6,886 vehicles sold in the same period last year.
