The latest global NEV sales figures released by research firm CleanTechnica indicate that in February 2025, sales hit 1.217 million units, marking a 49% year-on-year increase. Pure electric vehicle sales soared to 814,000 units, up 58%, while plug-in hybrid sales reached 403,000 units, a 35% year-on-year rise. The overall NEV market share reached 19% (with pure electric vehicles accounting for 13%), an increase of 6 percentage points from February 2024, affirming the global auto market's steady progression towards electrification.
Asia emerged as the primary driver of this month's sales growth, with China contributing approximately 75% of global sales (around 900,000 units), a 76% year-on-year surge. Indonesia and Vietnam also recorded substantial growth, with sales increasing by 205% and 220%, respectively. Singapore's electric vehicle sales accounted for 42% of the market, aiming for full auto market electrification by 2035, positioning it to become the second zero-emission auto market after Norway. North American sales grew by 20% year-on-year, while European sales increased by 19%.
In February, global pure electric vehicle registrations accounted for 67% of total NEV registrations, a 4 percentage point increase from the end of 2024, underscoring their continued dominance in the NEV market in 2025.
Among the top 20 best-selling NEV models globally, Tesla Model Y retained its top spot, despite a 28% year-on-year decline in monthly deliveries to 53,545 units. Model 3, with 39,423 units delivered this month, rose 18% year-on-year to reclaim third place. BYD Song maintained its second position with 45,185 registrations. Geely Xingyuan, which ranked third last month, slipped two places but still recorded a monthly sales increase to 28,588 units.
Xiaomi SU7 held steady in sixth place with sales of 23,728 units. New entrant Xpeng, a prominent new force brand, debuted in the top 10 at the 10th spot, delivering 15,312 Mona M03 units, a four-place jump from the previous month. Volkswagen ID.4, the only German traditional automaker on the list, achieved sales of 11,546 units, ranking 15th.
From January to February 2025, Tesla Model Y, BYD Song, and Tesla Model 3 retained their top three positions, maintaining this ranking since late 2022, demonstrating their robust and consistent market appeal.
February's best-selling brand statistics reveal BYD as the champion, with registrations reaching 309,000 units. Its overseas market share climbed to 22%, up from just 10% in 2024. Tesla, in second place, sold 98,000 units, a decline from the previous month, widening the gap with BYD. Geely, in third, witnessed a slight sales dip compared to the previous month but continued to progress with its diverse model lineup and export strategy.
Xpeng emerged as the best-selling new force brand, outperforming Li Xiang, Zero Run, and Xiaomi with 30,453 unit deliveries, ranking seventh. Vietnamese automaker VinFast, leveraging its strong sales in the domestic market (with an 85% sales share), ranked 20th with 14,803 units sold.
In terms of market share by automaker sales, BYD's share continued to climb, accounting for 24.8% of the market, a 1.2 percentage point increase from the previous month and a 6.5 percentage point jump from the same period last year. Geely (11.8%) and Tesla (8%) maintained stable market shares, ranking second and third, respectively. Volkswagen and SAIC Group saw slight declines in market share, with 7.1% and 5.4%, respectively, both down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month.
