On November 25, the news of Tesla Model Y's official price reduction became the focus of attention in the domestic automotive industry. The reason for such significant attention, in the view of Che Kuai Ping, is largely due to the excellent sales performance of Tesla Model Y.
Before the emergence of new energy vehicles, the throne of domestic SUV sales champion was almost always occupied by Haval H6, and it was difficult for other models to replace it. However, with the launch of Tesla Model Y, this pure electric SUV priced at over 200,000 yuan unexpectedly replaced Haval H6 as the domestic SUV sales champion.
This shows how popular Tesla Model Y is among consumers in the domestic market.
It is precisely because of Tesla Model Y's excellent sales performance that for a long time, the pure electric SUVs launched by domestic automakers, whether mid-sized or large-sized, have mostly been benchmarked against Tesla Model Y.
It is no exaggeration to say that Tesla Model Y is the benchmark model for domestic pure electric SUVs.
Despite facing numerous competitors, the latest sales data for October shows that Tesla Model Y is still the sales champion among domestic pure electric SUVs, with 36,204 units sold. From January to October, Tesla Model Y's cumulative sales exceeded 370,000 units. Among all domestic models, its sales rank second, closely following BYD Qin PLUS.
Of course, in addition to brand recognition, intelligent driving, and excellent performance, another crucial reason for Tesla Model Y's good sales in China is that its selling price in the domestic market is the lowest globally.
Taking the rear-wheel-drive version as an example, the domestic selling price was 249,900 yuan before the price reduction and dropped to 239,900 yuan afterward, setting a new low for Tesla Model Y's domestic selling price.
For comparison, the selling price of the rear-wheel-drive version of Tesla Model Y in the United States is equivalent to more than 320,000 yuan in Renminbi. In Germany and the United Kingdom, it is even more expensive, with a price equivalent to 430,000 yuan in Renminbi.
Not only Tesla Model Y but also Tesla Model 3 has the lowest selling price globally in the domestic market.
It should be noted that after the price reduction, Tesla Model Y is still eligible for a 5-year, 0% interest car purchase policy.
Seeing this, some may ask, why does Tesla Model Y need to reduce its price when its sales in China are so good? Is it to make way for new models?
Indeed, it is expected that the new Tesla Model Y will officially launch in the first quarter of next year. This price reduction by Tesla Model Y may be influenced by this factor but is not the primary reason.
The primary reason is the sales pressure currently faced by Tesla. According to officially released data, Tesla delivered 1.329 million vehicles globally in the first three quarters of this year, averaging 443,000 vehicles per quarter. If this sales progress continues, Tesla's global deliveries this year will be less than 1.78 million, a significant decrease from last year's 1.81 million vehicles.
In other words, if Tesla wants to maintain year-on-year sales growth this year, its global deliveries in the fourth quarter must reach at least 481,000 vehicles. And the domestic market is obviously the most important for Tesla.
Facing fierce competition in the domestic new energy vehicle market, the Tesla Model Y, which has not been updated for years, can only rely on price reductions to stimulate sales if it lacks competitiveness in terms of product features to achieve stable and increasing sales.
