In the first half of 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a total of 5 batches of new vehicle announcements, corresponding to batches 379-383. Diantuihui has conducted a comprehensive review and analysis of the relevant data. Among these 5 batches, a total of 38 enterprise groups declared 385 new energy passenger vehicle products, an increase of 39% compared to the cumulative 277 products in the first half of last year.
The number of new vehicle announcements does not necessarily align with product sales. In the first half of this year, Geely had the highest number of new product announcements with 40 new energy passenger vehicle products; followed by SAIC Motor with 37 announcements; and BYD, with the highest sales, had 36 announcements. Changan had 31, Chery had 29, and other companies with more than 10 announcements included Hozon, Dongfeng, Leapmotor, Lixiang, FAW, Wuling, FAW-Volkswagen, Great Wall, GAC, Dayun, and Beijing Automotive Group.
There is indeed a phenomenon in passenger vehicle enterprises of "more children, better fights," especially evident in BYD, whose products comprehensively cover various price points and market segments, driving its sales to rise steadily. By brand, Geely is undoubtedly the leader, with 10 brands declaring new energy passenger vehicle products; SAIC Motor has 5 brands; BYD has 4; and Chery, Dongfeng, and Great Wall each have 3 brands. As sales of plug-in hybrids and extended-range hybrids increase, some automakers have significantly increased their investments in these markets. Among the 385 new energy passenger vehicle products in the first half of this year, 14 enterprises declared 66 plug-in hybrid products, and 10 enterprises declared 55 extended-range hybrid products. In terms of new product power types, different enterprises have clear focuses in their product layout strategies. Apart from Thalys and Beijing Benz, all automakers have launched new pure electric vehicle products in the first half of the year, with Geely, SAIC Motor, and BYD ranking top three in terms of product quantity.
In the plug-in hybrid market, BYD, Chery, Great Wall, SAIC Motor, and Dongfeng rank top five. BYD leads in the number of new plug-in hybrid products, which is roughly equal to the number of new pure electric products, demonstrating a "two-legged" approach. Chery declared 10 new plug-in hybrid products, indicating that this type of vehicle also holds an important position in its product system. Great Wall declared 8 new plug-in hybrid products but only 2 pure electric ones, suggesting that plug-in hybrids are its primary focus. SAIC Motor declared only 5 new plug-in hybrid products, still focusing mainly on pure electric vehicles. Dongfeng declared 5 new plug-in hybrid products, exceeding the number of pure electric vehicles. The extended-range hybrid market is currently vibrant, with Lixiang and AITO ranking top two in sales in the first half of the year. Judging from the current market, Lixiang and AITO's sales in the extended-range hybrid market will continue to lead significantly.
In terms of new vehicle announcements for extended-range hybrids, Lixiang ranks first with 13 new product announcements, while only 1 pure electric model was announced in the first half of the year, indicating that Lixiang will continue to focus on the extended-range hybrid market in the short term. Changan declared 12 new extended-range hybrid products, with its sub-brands SL03, Qiyuan, and Avita all offering extended-range hybrid models. Dongfeng declared 9 new extended-range hybrid products, exceeding the number of pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, making extended-range hybrids a key market for Dongfeng. Leapmotor and Hozon, two emerging automakers, declared 8 and 6 new extended-range hybrid products respectively in the first half of the year, with Leapmotor's extended-range vehicles even outnumbering its pure electric vehicles. AITO, the second-highest seller, only declared 2 products in the first half of the year. Judging solely from new product announcements, only BYD, Changan, Chery, and Dongfeng have new products that comprehensively cover the pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and extended-range hybrid markets in the first half of this year.
