Apple's Folding iPhone: A $15,000 Revolution?

03/10 2025 394

The market currently harbors two distinct perspectives on foldable smartphones.

Some argue that foldable smartphones have no future, viewing them as inherently flawed. The current fascination with them is seen as mere indulgence on the part of manufacturers. Market trends suggest a waning demand for foldables, indicating that consumers are not embracing the concept.

Critics highlight numerous drawbacks, including high costs, vulnerability to damage, expensive repairs, bulkiness, and a lack of a developed ecosystem.

Conversely, supporters believe that foldable smartphones will significantly impact the future. As adoption grows, the ecosystem will mature, and current shortcomings will be addressed. The unique advantages of foldable screens are unmatched by traditional smartphones.

Regarding these differing opinions, some suggest that Apple's entry into the market will be the deciding factor. If Apple joins, it signals a promising future. If they delay, it implies that the era of foldables has yet to arrive, given Apple's renowned market insight.

Recently, Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned analyst at TF International Securities, predicted that Apple will enter the foldable smartphone market, with the first device expected by late 2026 or early 2027.

The anticipated price range is $2,000-$2,500 (currently approximately 14,501-18,126 Chinese yuan), with the possibility of exceeding this threshold.

Kuo stated that relevant Apple supply chains are already preparing for this launch.

According to Kuo, the foldable iPhone will feature a 7.8-inch internal screen and a 5.5-inch external screen. When folded, it will measure approximately 9-9.5 millimeters in thickness, comparable to current iPhone models but slightly thicker. When unfolded, it will be an ultra-slim 4.5-4.8 millimeters, thinner than some iPhones.

To achieve this slim profile, FaceID will be omitted in favor of side fingerprint recognition, also conserving internal space.

Crucially, this device will incorporate AI agents. Leveraging the large screen, Apple will enhance multitasking capabilities and AI functionality. By capitalizing on its ecological advantages, Apple aims to make this foldable iPhone an indispensable tool for work and entertainment.

What are your thoughts on this news? While Kuo's predictions are generally accurate, many believe that Apple's foldable iPhone is still a distant prospect, given the market's slow acceptance of foldable devices.

Furthermore, if Apple transforms a potential $5,000 iPhone into a $15,000 foldable, will consumers be willing to pay the premium?
