The curtains have lifted on MWC 2025, and Xiaomi is once again showcasing its prowess on the world stage. Surprisingly, the highlight of this year wasn't the anticipated Xiaomi 15 Ultra or the Xiaomi SUV7 Ultra, but an innovative lens that captured everyone's attention.
Introducing Xiaomi's groundbreaking magnetic detachable lens, designed to seamlessly integrate with the revamped Xiaomi 15. Utilizing magnetic attraction and spring contacts (a magnetic ring on the phone's back paired with two small spring interfaces), this lens allows users to directly enhance their phone's photography capabilities.
As an external smartphone lens, it surpasses the phone's built-in camera in terms of optical quality. It boasts a 100MP Light Fusion X Type 4/3 sensor, twice the size of the largest current 1-inch smartphone sensor, coupled with a 35mm F1.4 large aperture lens and an integrated autofocus motor.
Departing from traditional external lenses, Xiaomi's magnetic lens employs cutting-edge LaserLink technology for data transmission, achieving speeds of up to 10Gbps. This high-speed connection ensures a response time on par with built-in lenses and seamlessly integrates with Xiaomi phones' AI computational photography.
This marks a significant step forward for mobile photography. With limitations imposed by phone thickness and sensor size, external lenses offer a viable solution to elevate mobile photography to new heights.
Furthermore, this external connection method provides versatility. Photography enthusiasts can opt for the external lens, while casual users can rely on the built-in lens. However, it's worth noting that this external lens solution is currently in the conceptual phase, and its commercial success hinges on technological advancements and market reception.
