iPhone 16e: Third-Party Prices Plummet!

Apple's newly released iPhone 16e has garnered significant online buzz, yet critical opinions predominate. While this is not unprecedented, the reception of the iPhone 16e stands out as notably more negative. The core issue lies in a perceived lack of sincerity. From the outset, it's evident that the device is a lower-end variant of the iPhone 16, and some configuration compromises are expected. However, the iPhone 16e has suffered from an excessive number of "crippling" features, some of which significantly impact the user experience. If the pricing had remained relatively consistent with previous expectations, the situation might have been more tolerable. Instead, the abrupt 1000 yuan price hike came as a shock to many.

Despite government subsidies bringing the starting price down to 3999 yuan, the initial impression of the phone has been underwhelming. From its launch, swift price drops were anticipated, yet their swiftness caught many off guard. Currently, JD.com's self-operated store offers a 500 yuan government subsidy, a move independent of Apple. The TM flagship store has yet to display any government subsidy prompts, and other retailers may not have such substantial control over pricing.

Price Comparison

While JD.com's self-operated store is an authorized Apple retailer and the TM flagship store a direct Apple outlet, Pinduoduo's billion subsidy program operates independently of Apple. Nevertheless, it has also reduced prices, starting at 3998 yuan, just 1 yuan below the government subsidy price. With a price drop exceeding 10% even before official sales commence, it's fair to say that the market has rejected the iPhone 16e, clearly demonstrating its stance. On official channels, even two days after launch, orders still indicate delivery on the initial sales day of the 28th. While this could suggest ample inventory, the lack of initial user interest may also contribute to the ease of purchase.

Renowned industry analysts predict the iPhone 16e will sell around 20 million units in 2025, but the Chinese market may present a different scenario. At this price point, numerous alternatives exist, often boasting superior overall functional configurations compared to the 16e. This fierce competition could hinder the initial sales of the 16e.

Competitive Landscape

Personally, I believe 3999 yuan represents a more fitting starting price for the iPhone 16e. With government subsidies bringing it down to 3499 yuan, it would not only be competitive but dominant in the mid-range market. However, the current pricing has led many to adopt a wait-and-see approach, refraining from immediate purchases. This is due to expectations of further price drops post-launch. For those willing to wait until 618, there's a strong likelihood that prices will align with pre-launch expectations.

Perhaps Apple assumes that those who accept the iPhone 16's price will find the 16e's 1500 yuan lower starting price more palatable. For uninterested users, even an additional 500 yuan discount would still deem it expensive. Another possibility is that Apple priced the 16e at 4499 yuan to allow for subsequent price reductions.

Price Expectations

At what price point do you believe the iPhone 16e needs to reach to meet your psychological expectations?
